Powell-Peralta x Mike McGill Artwork;
Mike McGill joined the Powell Peralta team in 1980, and soon after became a core member of the legendary Bones Brigade.
Before the iconic Skull and Snake became his signature graphic, McGill's first pro-model board featured a Fighter Jet graphic, designed by Powell Peralta artist Vernon Courtlandt Johnson (VCJ).
In the summer of 1984, Mike McGill perfected the 540 degree front-flip aerial maneuver, known as the "540 McTwist" at a skate camp in Sweden. This innovative, competition changing vertical trick coincided with the time VCJ was tasked with developing a new pro-model board graphic for McGill.
With the popularity of the Powell-Peralta "Skull and Bones" theme, it was decided to use a similar theme for McGill's new deck. In a phone interview conducted by VCJ and a teenage Mike, noting that his home state of Florida "had a lot of rattle snakes that were green" and frequent thunderstorms, requested that a snake and lightning bolts be incorporated into the skull graphic.
McGill's 1984 Skull and Snake graphic, now an iconic Powell Peralta pro-board design of the 1980's skate aesthetic.
