The Independent Truck Company Cross Logo, originally designed by Jim Phillips in 1978, is one of the most recognisable symbols in skateboarding.
Phillips based the original vision on the "surfer's cross," a variant of the Iron Cross / Maltese Cross that was popular in 1960s California surf and biker culture. The logo was initially rejected by company founders because it looked "too Nazi". Phillips convinced them to use it after finding a photo of Pope John Paul II wearing a similar rounded cross on his robes. The logic was, "If the Pope can wear it, so can we". Unlike the traditional German Iron Cross, which has straight sides, the Independent version features rounded, flared edges.
In a branding shift, Independent began moving away from the Cross Logo in 2022, introducing alternative graphics such as the "Bar Logo" in alternate branding.
