Wax Guide
The ideal surf wax application(s) will provide moderate to high levels of stickiness, while providing stability underfoot.

  • Softer waxes: Are stickier and easier to apply. Can be prone to move, smear or rub away at pressure points / surfer contact points on the surfboard.
  • Harder waxes: Are less sticky, and somewhat more difficult to apply. More likely to stay in place and not smear or rub off at pressure points / surfer contact points on the surfboard.

Single Wax Formula Application V Basecoat and Topcoat Combinations;

  • Increased stickiness requires a softer wax which in turn can reduce stability under foot with single wax formula applications.
  • If single wax levels of stickiness and stability are adequate for conditions and needs, there is no reason to apply Basecoat / Topcoat combinations.
  • Basecoat / Topcoat combinations generally increase the stickiness achieved with a softer single wax application without sacrificing stability.

The Principle of Basecoat and Topcoat Combinations;

  • A harder Basecoat formula provides stability under foot with a long lasting surface texture that can hold the softer Topcoat wax in place, and prevent it from moving or rubbing away at strategic points on the deck of your surfboard.
  • With a firm Basecoat, the Topcoat wax formula can be much softer and stickier than any wax you could use without a Basecoat.

Guidelines for Basecoat / Topcoat Combinations;

  • A Basecoat must be sufficiently hard to remain stable at water temperature.
  • Any Topcoat formula can be used that suits the water temperature and surfing needs, as long as it is softer than the Basecoat wax.
